Fayetteville City Council Approves Drainage Basin Cleanup

April 28, 2016

The Fayetteville City Council officially approved the bid to clean up the drainage basins and ditches in Summit Point at their meeting on April 21, 2016. Weatherup Construction won the bid and is expected to begin cleaning up and repairing the overgrown areas in the next couple of weeks.

The approximately $20,000 proposal was presented to the City Council by Public Services Director Chris Hindman and it was approved unanimously. Once the project has begun, it is expected to take about three weeks to complete.

According to city engineer Dan Davis, Weatherup Construction has been contracted to remove the accumulated silt in the drainage areas, restore positive draining, remove the excess underbrush and trees, restore the riprap, and remove the trash and debris.

Some of the trees along the banks of the ditches will apparently not be removed because they help prevent erosion. In addition, new cypress and red maple trees will be planted along the sides of the drainage areas. Special grasses and wild flowers that are appropriate for preventing erosion will also be planted.

The process involved with getting final approval for the cleanup was long and time-consuming. Initial estimates were that project would cost about $10,000, and the accepted bid came in at twice that cost.

The Summit Point HOA will be responsible for maintaining the drainage basins and ditches after the work has been completed. These areas will need to be sprayed once or twice a year to prevent unwanted vegetation from redeveloping.
